MOVIES: Cinema Traumatica

No post today. I was planning to write last night, but then Rusty brought home Terry Gilliam's latest flick, Tideland, which, well. Well. How to explain. Think Brazil meets Alice in Wonderland meets Faulkner (a dash of As I Lay Dying combined with a soupçon of "A Rose for Emily"). Sounds horrifying, right? And yet it was actually so much worse.

Jesus, Mary and friggin Joseph. I can barely type this, what with the fact that I'm rocking back and forth and sucking my thumb. Someone throw a blanket over me.

For the love of God, STOP LETTING HIM PICK MOVIES.

Y'know ... I almost picked up that movie last night. And then when I brought home a different one instead, Tideland was the first preview.

To me, it looked like a more grotesque Pan's Labyrinth ... glad I skipped it?

Tara, I know! WHEN WILL I LEARN?

Cap'n, it depends. Do you like grotesque? I mean, don't get me wrong. It's a Gilliam movie, so it's absolutely gorgeous -- or at least fantastically hideous -- to look at. But how many other times has Gilliam seen fit to make an appearance at the beginning of the DVD with a DISCLAIMER that this movie may fuck your shit up? (I may be paraphrasing somewhat.) None, that's how many. And I was stupid enough not to take him seriously.

I compared/contrasted Tideland with Pan's Labyrinth. Night and Day, those movies: Jeliza Rose was oblivious to her grim surroundings, but Ofelia was so hyper-tuned to her grim surroundings that she reconfigured them into an acceptable reality. My review made more sense...I'm a little tired as I type this.
