BOOKS: And Now Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Book Blog

Chinua Achebe wins the Booker Prize for fiction.
Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe won the 2007 Man Booker International Prize for fiction Wednesday, beating such celebrated nominees as Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan.

The $120,000 prize is awarded every two years for a body of fiction. Achebe, 76, is best known for his first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), and Anthills of the Savannah, published more than 30 years later. He has written more than 20 books, including novels, short stories, essays and collections of poetry.

"Chinua Achebe's early work made him the father of modern African literature as an integral part of world literature," said Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, one of the three judges for the award.
I'm blown away by the talent among this batch of Booker contenders. In addition to Roth, Atwood and McEwan, Achebe was up against Michael Ondaatje, Alice Munro, Don DeLillo, Salman Rushdie, Doris Lessing, and Peter Carey, to name just a few.

I haven't read anything by Achebe since I read The African Trilogy -- which includes his celebrated first novel Things Fall Apart -- almost fifteen years ago. Man. It sure doesn't seem like that much time has passed. I think I need to revisit his books. (I think I also need to read something by Doris Lessing. Should I be embarrassed that I haven't already?)

I reread Things Fall Apart last year. I haven't read anything else by him, but it's only because I forget when browsing. I'll have to write myself a note.

By Lessing I have read The Fifth Child which I liked and the follow-up Ben in the World which, well, I didn't like as much. She has written so much and I am not sure if these two are characteristic of her stuff--they were short but dense and emotional and a bit odd.

I honestly haven't read anything but excerpts of Achebe's work although I have always wanted to read more...

I've read a couple of Doris Lessing novels. I want to read more. Someone on bookcrossing sent me one of her novels recently, but the title is fuzzy in my mind -- could it be "Briefing For A Descent Into Hell"?

I think I should be embarrassed that I haven't read Things Fall Apart yet.

I just got Things Fall Apart, and haven't had a chance to read it yet. I was inspired to do so when I went back to re-read an article that Kurt Vonnegut wrote about visiting Biafra, and meeting Achebe there, right after Vonnegut died. It looks really interesting, and I'm looking forward to it.

I haven't read a book by any of the authors you mentioned, although I own a few of their books, so if anyone should be embarrassed...*shuffles*
