ETC: Overheard in Vancouver

SCENE: New Year's Eve day. Outside a busy liquor store, a teenaged male oh-so-casually asks various passersby to help him buy some booze. Upon being turned down by a rough-around-the-edges middle-aged guy, the following exchange erupts:
Teenager (bitterly): Why is it only old people are allowed to buy beer?
Middle-aged guy (more bitterly): Because we're the ones who NEED it.

Have you read The Keep by Jennifer Egan yet? I didn't notice it on your 50 Books for 2006 list. I am reading it right now and it's fantastic. I've pick up a number of books you've mentioned on your site and really enjoyed them. I'm sure you've heard of this book, but if you haven't yet, I highly recommend reading it.

I wish I was there to see it. Canada has such witty older people. The smart older people here are usually rude and obnoxious, not witty at all.

I don't get it. Older people really DO need the beer, as far as I can tell. Youth is wasted on the wrong people, a wise man once said (in It's a Wonderful Life, which I watched too many times this past Christmas because I was sick, SICK, I tell you! in bed.)

But I digress: I love your blog.
