ETC: To Sleep, Perchance

Insomnia. Tired. So tired. Gah.

One thing my fellow insomniacs may relate to: How non-insomniacs like to give us helpful advice. Such as "Just close your eyes" and "It's all in your head" and "Get over it."

Why, THANK YOU. None of those things had OCCURRED TO ME. I will just close my eyes and use my phenomenal brain power to GET OVER IT. Where do you live? I'd like to send you a flaming bag of dog poo a nice thank-you note.

I have insomnia too. You should read that insomnia book by Michael Breus... "The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program"... it has some helpful advice about turning your head off.

Have you tried counting sheep or a warm glass of a milk?

Sorry about the insomnia, Doppelganger! I feel you, I had a bout of it that lasted for a month last August and it was rough. I got the "get over it" and "it's all in your head" thing too, but my personal favourite oh-so-helpful suggestion was "why don't you just go to sleep?"

I wish had a miracle cure to offer but, unfortunately, nothing really worked for me except waiting for it to pass. I hope you have better luck!

It's like you read my mind. I have been having insomnia for a couple weeks now. It comes and goes but it was particularly bad last night -- I was exhausted and yet NO SLEEP.

Oddly I can nap with complete ease. In fact the only time I can get good sleep is if I just zonk out after work.

The only cure I've found is Tylenol PM.

Wow, I've had it for a week now too! What's going on here? There's nothing worse.

How about: "Have you tried reading a book until you get tired?"

Grrrr. Explain to me how this is supposed to work when I'm *too exhausted to make my eyes focus* and *still* can't fall asleep.

I feel for you - it's plagued me literally since infancy (insert screams of terror from all parents reading).

Insommnia or hot flashes...hmmmm...Pick up the book I'm currently wading through and I'm off to slumberland in a snap.

Ugh, I get, "so go to bed earlier" .. um, earlier than 9pm? Thanks, I'll try it. *sigh*

Ah, the musical sound of my sister's laughter. It makes it all worthwhile.

Aw, man. I'm so sorry about the insomnia.

I've only ever had a short bout of it but a friend has battled it off and on for years. I don't know how she functions and I really don't know how she refrains from killing all those people who offer such helpful advice.

I will simply offer sympathy.

Try to trick your brain. Do the opposite of what everybody is telling you to do. Let me know if I am onto something here.

P.S. HOT FLASHES!!! HA HA HA HA HA! That's a good one!

P.P.S. I am still laughing my ass off.

I get insomnia too from time to time. It sucks. I have no advice for you. Just sympathy.

Having suffered from crippling insomnia since I hit puberty, I have so much empathy for those "just have a cup of warm milk and close your eyes" suggestions.

Like other commenters, I wish I had real advice to offer, but I don't function without sleeping pills. It really is a terrible thing to live with -- incredible how devastating it is to every area of life after a while. Hope yours abates soon.

Oh man. I feel ya, sister. About once a quarter, I get three weeks of non-sleep. Traditional Medicinals (holistic tea) makes a nighty-nite tea that works occasionally and you don't feel like you're coming out of a four-day stonefest when you wake up.
Best wishes for happy naps!
